Here at Pure Roots Farm, we use a process that has come to be known simply as, Natural Farming. This natural approach mimics the processes we find in nature – all inputs here are natural, coming from the property itself or the nearby woods. The focus is on soil health – especially with the assistance in growth and maintenance of healthy microbial populations in the soil, nutrition obtained from the breakdown of crops and crop residue – all reintegrated into the soil in which we grow each year’s new crops. Our methods are adapted from those used in Korea : Korean Natural Farming (KNF) and JADAM. We use a mixture of both of these philosophies to promote nutritious food, naturally reduce pest pressure and also fight disease with natural methods.
In short, these are the benefits of our system here:
Soil Health: We treat the soil as a living entity, focusing on retaining moisture and building healthy organic matter through natural processes.
Minimal Tillage: Sometimes to start a field, we till in the beginning, but avoid thereafter in order to maintain the living structure of the soil.
On-Farm Inputs: We use natural resources local to the farm and thus properly related to the crops grown in the same area.
No Chemical Inputs: Natural farming completely avoids synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides.
Environmental Benefits: Our process promotes a reduced carbon footprint, conserves biodiversity, and prevents soil degradation.
Sustainable: Our system is resilient and self-sufficient and can meet the needs of the community’s desire for healthy, nutritious food.
